Aromatherapy & Essential Oils for Anxiety

Aromatherapy for Anxiety is very popular because our sense of smell triggers powerful emotional responses. We process so much information through our sense of smell in particular, in an area of the brain adjacent to the Limbic region.


This is the area of emotional processing and memory recall. When the scent of essential oil is inhaled, molecules enter the nasal cavities and stimulate a firing of mental response in the limbic system of the brain. These stimulants regulate stress or calming responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, production of hormones and blood pressure. Aromatherapy can be obtained by using it in the shower, as direct inhalations, hot water vapor, vaporizer or humidifier, fan, vent, perfume, or through aromatherapy diffusers.



What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Sometimes it’s called essential oil therapy. 4. Bergamot

5. Bitter Orange

6. Vetiver

7. Ylang Ylang

It is also used for lowering high blood pressure. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is heralded for being helpful with stress and anxiety. It's also used in cases of depression or when trying to cope with anger.

8. Cedarwood 
Cedarwood essential oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation from the wood pieces of the cedar wood tree. Cedarwood oil is an excellent sedative and has a great soothing and calming effect on the mind. This feature also helps in promoting healthy, restorative, and uninterrupted sleep, so it is often used by patients suffering from insomnia. In aromatherapy, the scent can induce the release of serotonin, which is converted into melatonin in the brain. Melatonin induces a calm and restorative sleep. For this reason, cedarwood aromatherapy is recommended for people with chronic anxiety, stress, and depression.

9. Frankincense
Frankincense essential oil comes from the resin, or sap, inside the Boswellia tree. The sap is extracted and then left to dry and harden. Once hardened, it is then steam distilled to produce a pure essential oil. Frankincense essential oil continues to be one of the most popular essential oils due to its many amazing benefits. It is a common type of essential oil used in aromatherapy that can offer a variety of health benefits, including helping relieve chronic stress and anxiety, reducing pain and inflammation, and boosting immunity. Frankincense uses even potentially apply to fighting cancer.

10. Clary Sage
Clary Sage is a Stress-Relieving Insomnia Fighter. The incredible power that clary sage essential oil has to alleviate feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress comes from its antidepressant properties. It lowers the stress hormone, cortisol, and induces feelings of confidence and pleasure. Once the stress levels are under control, the sedative qualities of clary sage essential oil can kick in and promote peaceful slumber. And the anti-inflammatory properties it holds can produce a calming effect for those who have chronic conditions.

Risks of Essential Oils for Anxiety
Never ingest any essential oils or apply undiluted to the skin without proper training or medical supervision. It is critical to understand how best to use them. Always consult a specialist and test the area, proceeding with caution as they may react differently to different individuals, especially children, and pregnant women.

If not done correctly and safely, however, the use of essential oils can have severe consequences.

Essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs offer both psychological and physical benefits. Not only does the aroma of the natural essential oil stimulate the brain to trigger a reaction, but when inhaled into the lungs, the natural constituents (naturally occurring chemicals) can supply therapeutic benefit. Diffusing eucalyptus essential oil to help ease congestion is a prominent example.
