Unsold, unwanted but Edible UglyFood: Save Food Cut Wastage

Most people are not aware of the current food wastage situation. Food waste in Singapore is one of the biggest waste streams, and the amount of food waste generated has increased over the last 10 years by approx 20%. Each household generally generates an average of 1.5kg of food waste daily (which mostly could have been prevented).

While there are many communities and groups that are active in various save the earth, recycling programs. However, only approx 18% of all the food waste is generally "saved".

We may live in a country which is world-class waste management systems, but it's still not enough when we are overly reliant on these solutions and neglects the role we have to play in striving for a better, greener Singapore.

You can do your part by:

(1) Save business/home's leftover food and donate it to:
- OLIO Free sharing App
- Singapore Food to give away

(2) Plan your meals ahead of time, buy or cook only what you need

To better minimize food waste, you can begin with simply being careful to only purchase what your household needs. So as to avoid having to throw away spoiled food, on top of that exploring how you can transform scrap leftovers into new dishes for your next meal... instead of buying new.

(3) Buy Uglyfood

Buy what others don't want, or the ones they choose to not choose. Uglyfood's team has a deep passion regards for looking into Singapore's Food wastage issue. The founder, Pei Shan made an extra effort to source the food that may possibly become food waste and sell it at an Affordable for like-minders. Since the launch of  Uglyfood, it has saved more than 7000 fruits and vegetables (as updated in 2019)

The main goal for Uglyfood is to:
-Accelerate the minimization of the impact of food wastage on the rapidly deteriorating health of our planet
-Reduce food-related poor health outcomes

Most people when they go to the Market to buy their fruits and vegetables, most people will tend to choose and select the nicest and freshest looking food. Most people won't even choose the fruits & vegetables that have tiny blemishes. Have you ever thought about where would the "not so nice looking" fruits and vegetables go? They would probably be unsold and become a new batch of food wastage.

Uglyfood gives a New life to all these  "Ugly" versions of fruits & vegetables. Your purchase makes a small difference in the food ecosystem and furthers the aim to consume sustainably.

So far, so good. Sometimes you may receive not just Uglyfood, or you received more than what you ordered. Sometimes, you may receive overripe fruits... but it's still edible. Here's a way to use your overripe fruits, click here to read.

When the Ugly ingredients are cooked, it looks almost like the ones in Supermarket. Here's my Laksa Leaf and my Laksa.

Uglyfood doesn't just provide ala-carte Fruits and Vegetables that you may need, they bundle it up. You really don't need to buy a lot of each kind of Vegetable and Fruit. Simply add its bundle selections into the cart and you can try many varieties of food groceries.

Here I've tried the Red Apple Sampling Bundle, it's a mix of different types of red apples. I really didn't know or didn't see some Apples before. The possibilities of 5 types of apples you may get from this Bundle is:
