Must-Know for Food Lovers: Parasite Risks, Deworming Advice & Worm Types Explained!

Last year, during a private body check-up and scan, I was shocked to discover I had four different types of parasitic worms in my body. While threadworms and pinworms are common, I had two other less typical types as well — it really opened my eyes.

For those who don’t know, different parasitic worms affect our bodies in different ways. Here are some common types and what they can do:

Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis): Itching around the anus, especially at night, disturbed sleep, and irritability.

Threadworms: Often confused with pinworms, but similar effects — restlessness, sleep issues, and discomfort.

Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides): Can grow long in the intestines, causing abdominal pain, bloating, and even nutrient deficiencies.

Hookworms: These feed on your blood and may cause fatigue, anemia, and skin rashes where larvae entered.

Whipworms (Trichuris trichiura): Chronic diarrhea, stomach pain, weight loss, and even growth impairment in children.

Tapeworms (Taenia): Often contracted through undercooked meat or fish; symptoms include nausea, weakness, and unexplained weight loss.

Liver flukes (Opisthorchis or Clonorchis): Contracted from raw freshwater fish; can cause liver inflammation, bile duct obstruction, and long-term liver damage.

Giardia (technically a protozoa, not a worm): Found in contaminated water or food, causes diarrhea, bloating, and fatigue.

Most deworming medicines only target a few specific parasites, and not all at once. I went through several rounds of treatments, trying both herbal remedies and pharmacy medications. What finally worked for me was Zentel tablets.

Zentel is typically known to target roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and pinworms — but in my experience, it seemed to help with more than just those. I could feel my body getting better, and I trust that instinct.

Since then, I’ve made it a point to take Zentel every 6 months. As someone who loves food — especially raw seafood, sashimi, and street food — I can’t imagine giving all that up. But I also want to stay healthy and safe. This is my little routine to enjoy what I love without fear.

Ever heard how in Malaysia, some people do the same? — Not because they’re sick, but just for peace of mind. It’s a common habit there, especially for foodies who eat out often or enjoy raw dishes. Taking a deworming tablet every few months is just a smart and simple way to stay cautious.

This blog post is really for people like me — food lovers who sometimes worry about catching parasites from what we eat. If you’ve ever felt that fear after enjoying something delicious, you’re not alone. This is what I do to take care of myself — and you can too. Better safe than sorry!
