It was my first ever Jeep ride up a mountain, and I was pretty excited about it!
Initially, I planned to book through Klook, but I found the listing options a bit confusing and hard to choose from. Thankfully, one of my travel buddies had done it before and suggested we get help from our private driver. He had a local contact and managed the booking for us—super smooth and fuss-free.
When we were there, we left our hotel in Ubud around 1–2am and reached Mount Batur by about 4am, just in time to wait for the sunrise. There were more than a dozens of jeeps scattered across the mountain—some ahead of us, some behind—so we weren’t the first or the last up there. It was quite a scene!
The jeeps park right along the edge of the slope, which can look terrifying at first glance—but they’re surprisingly stable. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but definitely worth it if you’re looking to conquer a fear or try something new.
I wasn’t too scared since I was up for the adventure, but I’ll admit, sitting on the jeep so close to the edge did make my heart skip a beat. Still, I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t climb up to the top—so I did!
Managed to snap a few shots too. Our jeep driver tried his best with the photos, but if you're particular about getting great shots, definitely bring a friend who knows how to shoot well. A tripod didn’t work for us—the ground was too uneven and it kept toppling over.
Get your shots from every angle—you’ll thank yourself later!
I actually planned my outfit ahead of time, hoping to wear something nice for photos—maybe even a dress. But after knowing that it gets really cold up there in the early morning, I decided to go with a comfy, pajama-style outfit instead. I had seen other tourists dress casually too, so I went for a more natural look. Honestly, the view was stunning enough on its own—I didn’t feel the need to go full Instagram-glam for this one.
I can’t recommend which exact Klook listing to go with since I didn’t use one, but if you'd like a reliable private driver who can arrange it all easily, I recommend Wiraa: +62 819-1707-9922. Super helpful and made the whole experience much smoother.
Just a heads-up—going up and down the hills involves a lot of bumpy, rocky terrain, so be prepared for a shaky ride! Make sure to hold on tight, and avoid carrying any loose items that could fall or get disconnected during the journey. Bring bags that can be securely zipped, tied, or fastened shut, and double-check that nothing is dangling or easy to drop. The same goes for your clothing—avoid loose-fitting pants or flowy dresses that could get caught or flap around too much.
