BookXcess Penang Gurney Paragon: Unique Malaysia Book Store

Have I ever told you how much I adore BookXcess? Because honestly, I could go on and on about this not really hidden gem but a gem for book lovers! 

Over the past few trips to Malaysia, I’ve made it a point to stop by several of their outlets—and each visit has felt like stepping into a book lover’s dream. So far, I’ve explored their branches at Sunway Big Box in Johor, the RexKL outlet in Kuala Lumpur, and the Gurney Plaza outlet in Penang—and every single one has offered a different yet delightful experience.

Each location has its own unique charm. The RexKL store, for instance, stands out with its artsy, indie vibe housed in a repurposed cinema which I'll be posting soon about it here on my blog - so Stay Tuned!

It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger for hours, flipping through titles you didn’t even know you were looking for. Meanwhile, Sunway’s BookXcess feels like a massive treasure trove—spacious, well-lit, and filled with shelves upon shelves of books just waiting to be discovered. Now, while the Penang outlet at Gurney Plaza might not win awards for the most visually stunning setup compared to the other two, it still completely won me over with its incredible selection. I wasn’t expecting much, but the range of genres, the discounted prices, and the sheer number of titles available had me grinning from ear to ear. And yes... I left with a few more books than planned (again). Oops?

If you’re a fellow bookworm or just someone who enjoys the quiet thrill of finding a good read at a great price, BookXcess absolutely needs to be on your Malaysia must-visit list. It’s more than just a bookstore—it’s a cozy, creative escape filled with stories, ideas, and inspiration.

Moreover, I really love the section where they added a “blind date with a book.” While I’m not someone who usually buys books based on someone else’s choice or a random pick, I find this idea really intriguing—especially for those who enjoy surprises, are open to reading anything, or simply aren’t sure what to choose.
